US midterm elections 2026 LIVE: Residents vote in the midterm elections at the Old Stone School in Hillsboro, Virginia.

US midterm elections 2026 LIVE: Voters across all 50 US states cast their ballots in-person for the crucial midterm elections across the country. At 6pm ET, polling closed in some districts of Indiana and Kentucky, marking the first set of poll closures. Alaska will be the last US state to vote as polling there ends at 1am ET on Wednesday (November 4).

The results will determine which party controls the US House of Representatives and the US Senate. Democrats need to win four additional Senate seats and three House seats to take control of both chambers from Republicans.

Control of US Congress would give Democrats the power to challenge President Donald Trump’s agenda during the final two years of his term. The fight for control is largely centred on states and districts that Trump previously won by wide margins.

The Senate races in Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Ohio and Texas are among the key contests to watch. House battlegrounds are spread across the country.

A legal setback for Trump before polls

In a setback to US President Donald Trump, the Supreme Court on Monday denied the Justice Department’s emergency appeal, refusing to temporarily prevent California from counting mail-in ballots submitted by approximately 20,000 individuals whom federal officials suspected might not be US citizens.

According to American statistician Nate Silver and the FLIPR 2026 midterm election forecast, Democratic candidates are leading in polling averages across several key battleground states, including Texas, Ohio, Michigan, Maine and Iowa.

Trump closed out the midterm campaign with remarks at the Reflecting Pool, where he held up photos touting his administration’s renovations. As for the elections, the president repeated his frequent refrain about how midterm results often go against the sitting president’s party.

“For some reason, the sitting president doesn’t win the midterms. But we gave this a very strong shot,” Trump said.

Earlier, Trump had said he would “veto everything” if Democrats win back power in Congress.

What midterms decide

The outcome of the midterms will decide which political party – Trump’s Republicans or opposition Democrats – controls Congress and how easy it is for the president to carry out his plans.

In the US House of Representatives, all 435 seats are up for grabs and 35 seats out of 100 are being contested in the Senate.

Of the 35 seats up for grabs in the Senate, the Democrats currently hold 13 and Republicans are leading with 22. In order to take control of the chamber, the Democrats need a total of 51 seats in the Senate.

Meanwhile, in the House of Representatives, the Republican Party won a majority of the seats in 2024. The Republicans secured 220 seats, while Democrats secured 215 seats. 218 seats are needed to secure a majority.

Key issue ahead of midterms

Apart from the ongoing war between the United States and Iran, the state of the US economy remains a key issue for voters ahead of the midterm elections.

Immigration is another key issue with Republicans saying Trump has delivered on a major campaign pledge in 2024 by tightening the border and launching a widespread crackdown on illegal immigration.

Concerns over AI, inflation and Trump’s trade tariff policies are also among key issues.

Polling locations in Easttown Township, St. John’s Presbyterian Church and Goshen Baptist Church will remain open until 8:30 p.m. ET. Voters arriving after the original 8 p.m. closing time will be required to cast provisional ballots.

According to the Pennsylvania state website, provisional ballots are provided when election officials need additional time to verify a voter’s eligibility. An extension of polling hours is among the limited circumstances in which this option is used, allowing voters to submit their ballots while the county election board determines whether they qualify to be counted.

Although polling stations opened at 7 a.m., equipment issues at the three affected precincts caused delays of 15 to 30 minutes for voters. All voting machines were operational by 7:30 a.m.

Chester County spokesperson Andrew Kreider said the extended voting hours would not delay the counting process. He also confirmed that the county had already started counting mail-in ballots.

US midterm elections 2026 LIVE: Justice Department sends election monitors to all 50 states in its largest ever deployment

US midterm elections 2026 LIVE: The US Justice Department said on Tuesday that it was sending 1,000 election monitors and observers to all 50 states, describing the deployment as the largest Election Day monitoring effort in history.

Officials said the monitors would focus on areas with a record of problems accessing the ballot and locations with competitive races where voters could face intimidation.

The Trump administration has adopted a more assertive approach to election oversight, seeking voter-registration data from states and arguing that tighter safeguards are needed to maintain public confidence in the vote. Critics told news agency Reuters that the moves amount to federal overreach.

“Election monitors will be checking for compliance with the federal voting rights statutes that fall within the jurisdiction of the (Civil Rights Division),” the Justice Department statement said.

The number of monitors is about three times the total deployed during the previous midterm election. The department said the effort would be the largest in its history.

US midterm elections 2026 LIVE: Democrats optimistic, Republicans hold out hope in crucial test

US midterm elections 2026 LIVE: Democrats were cautiously hopeful as Republicans poured tens of millions of dollars into states and districts that Trump won comfortably two years ago during the campaign’s final stretch.

They are counting on “frustration over Trump’s failure” to rein in rising costs, along with the view that he has prioritised beautifying the nation’s capital over easing people’s financial pressures, to keep Republican voters at home and bring their own supporters to the polls, news agency AP reported.

Republicans hoped their financial advantage would help limit their losses. But they were preparing for a possible defeat in the race for the House, while trying to retain the Senate – a result that had seemed unlikely earlier this year because the electoral map was considered favourable to them.

Three Trump-aligned groups — MAGA Inc., No Going Back PAC and Safety and Affordability PAC — have spent more than $163 million on advertising and air time since Sept. 1. Nearly 40% of that money — more than $63 million — has been spent in states and districts where Trump won by 10 percentage points or more in the 2024 election, according to an Associated Press analysis of data from AdImpact, which tracks media spending and ad buys.

US midterm elections 2026 LIVE: Key Senate races to watch out for

US midterm elections 2026 LIVE: Several closely contested races across the country could influence the balance of power in Washington.

The Senate contests in Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas and Alaska, alongside competitive House districts in Pennsylvania, Iowa and New York, are among the races attracting national attention.

Here are some of the closely watched contests:

  • Georgia: Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff is defending his seat against Republican Congressman Mike Collins. The contest is being watched as Republicans seek to gain ground in a state that has become increasingly competitive in federal elections.
  • North Carolina: Former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper is facing Republican Michael Whatley, the former Republican National Committee chairman, in an open Senate race. Democrats view the seat as an important opportunity to expand their Senate representation.
  • Ohio: Republican Senator Jon Husted faces former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, who is attempting to return to the Senate after losing his 2024 re-election bid. The contest has also brought attention to debates over data centre expansion.
  • Texas: Republican Ken Paxton is competing against Democrat James Talarico. The race has attracted national attention because of the state’s long-standing Republican dominance in statewide elections.
  • Alaska: Republican Senator Dan Sullivan faces a challenge from former Democratic Congresswoman Mary Peltola. The contest is being closely monitored as Democrats look for opportunities to gain a seat in traditionally Republican territory.
